Mazda CX-90 "Sticky Steering" & Power Steering Assist Defect

Scott Hirsch Law Group PLLC is currently investigating certain 2024–2025 Mazda CX-90 (including gas and PHEV models) and CX-70 vehicles for critical safety defects relating to sudden, intermittent steering stiffness and momentary power steering loss. A defect within the electronic power steering (EPS) gear assembly and worm gear spring pre-load causes the steering wheel to "stick," bind, or dramatically increase in required steering effort while in motion, creating severe collision hazards.

CX-90 Owners Report Sudden Steering Resistance, Notching, and Return-to-Center Failure

Drivers of 2024–2025 Mazda CX-90 vehicles report alarming instances where the steering wheel suddenly feels stiff, jerky, or locked in place—commonly referred to as "sticky steering". This condition frequently manifests while driving straight at highway speeds or making subtle lane corrections, requiring excessive manual force to break the steering wheel free. Drivers describe momentary overcorrection risks once the wheel unbinds, as well as the steering wheel failing to return smoothly to the center position after completing a turn.

NHTSA Investigates Recall Remedy Ineffectiveness and Ongoing Steering Failures

Although Mazda previously initiated a safety recall (Recall 6524A / NHTSA Recall 24V-037) to modify the spring pre-load and re-grease the worm gear, federal safety regulators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened a Recall Query investigation after dozens of owners reported that the "sticky" binding defect continues or reoccurs even after receiving the official dealership fix. In many cases, authorized dealerships report they cannot duplicate the intermittent issue or face long part delays when attempting to replace entire steering rack assemblies.
