Ram ProMaster Owners Report Power Steering Failures and Costly Repairs

Ram ProMaster owners have reported sudden or intermittent losses of power steering assistance, sometimes while driving, making their vehicles extremely difficult to steer. Some owners describe steering wheels that jerk violently or become difficult to turn, accompanied by multiple dashboard warning lights or, in some cases, no warning before the failure. Reports also describe water intrusion and corrosion in electrical connectors and wiring harnesses, requiring replacement of the steering rack, power steering components, or associated wiring. Some owners have reported repair bills of thousands of dollars, including instances in which the steering system continued to malfunction shortly after repairs were completed.

Stellanti's Attempt to Remedy

Stellantis has announced a safety recall covering approximately 265,512 vehicles after identifying a risk that water may enter the electric power steering wiring harness, potentially disabling power steering assistance. The company plans to have dealerships inspect and replace the wiring harness and electric power steering gear as necessary. However, owners have reported costly steering system repairs, including instances in which problems persisted after repairs were completed. These reports raise concerns about whether the measures taken by Stellantis adequately address the underlying defect and provide a lasting solution for affected owners.
