GMC Sierra 1500 Detaching Upper Grille Deflector Defect

Scott Hirsch Law Group PLLC is currently investigating certain 2022–2024 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks for critical safety defects involving the upper front grille deflector. Structural flaws and fatigue fractures in the deflector’s mounting tabs and clip retainers cause the large chrome or painted trim molding positioned above the grille to loosen, fracture, and violently detach at highway speeds, creating severe road hazards for trailing traffic.

GMC sierraSierra Owners Report Parts Flying Off at Highway Speeds, Windshield Damage, and Rattles

Drivers of 2022–2024 GMC Sierra pickups report sudden, alarming incidents where the front upper grille deflector breaks away while cruising in traffic. Prior to detachment, drivers frequently observe visible gaps along the front hood line, loose or vibrating trim, or loud fluttering and rattling sounds at speed. When the eight internal retention clips fracture under aerodynamic loads, the deflector separates without warning, launching into following traffic. Federal incident reports document flying deflectors shattering windshields, damaging trailing vehicles, and forcing adjacent drivers to swerve abruptly to avoid high-speed debris.

NHTSA Opens Recall Query Covering Over 535,000 Trucks as Prior Fixes Fail

Federal regulators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened a Recall Query (RQ26003) covering an estimated 535,639 GMC Sierra 1500 trucks after receiving dozens of complaints of flying trim pieces—including over 20 separate incidents occurring on vehicles that had already undergone GM’s prior safety recall repair (NHTSA Recall 25V-060). General Motors previously limited its recall scope to select 2022 models with chrome deflectors, attempting an epoxy-reinforcement fix at dealerships. However, evidence indicates the epoxy repair fails over time and the defect plagues newer 2023 and 2024 models as well. We are investigating whether General Motors manufactured and sold these trucks with defective exterior mounting architecture and failed to execute an effective, permanent remedy.
