Hyundai Ioniq 9 Power Rear Seat Entrapment & Crush Hazard Defect

Scott Hirsch Law Group PLLC is currently investigating 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 electric three-row SUVs (including Limited, Calligraphy, and Calligraphy Design trims) for critical safety defects involving the motorized second-row seating system. Due to a software and sensor detection defect, the power folding second-row seats fail to detect an obstruction or person in their path, causing the seats to continue motorized movement and forcefully trap occupants.

Ioniq 9 Owners Face Pinch and Entrapment Risks During Automatic Seat Folding

Hyundai heavily marketed the flagship all-electric Ioniq 9 SUV to families, highlighting its premium one-touch automatic power fold-and-stow second-row seats designed for seamless third-row access. However, safety investigations revealed that the motorized seats lack an effective anti-pinch safety reversal mechanism. When the automatic fold, slide, or stow function is engaged, the heavy power seats fail to stop or reverse upon encountering resistance, continuing to motor forward or down onto passengers. This defect poses life-threatening entrapment hazards to young children seated or standing in the rear cabin, as well as crushing risks to hands, limbs, and torsos.

Federal Safety Recall Acknowledges Child Entrapment Danger

Hyundai Motor America submitted a safety recall report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA Campaign No. 26V-588 / Hyundai Recall No. 307) covering thousands of 2026 Ioniq 9 luxury SUVs. Until software remedies can be inspected or deployed via Over-the-Air (OTA) updates and dealership visits, Hyundai has issued urgent interim warnings instructing owners to exercise extreme caution and ensure that children are not seated in or near the second-row seating area during power-folding operations. We are investigating whether Hyundai manufactured, marketed, and sold these premium family vehicles with inadequate anti-pinch fail-safes and whether owners have suffered vehicle downtime, loss of intended utility, or traumatic child entrapment injuries.
