Chevrolet & GMC Power Steering Assist Failure Defect

Scott Hirsch Law Group PLLC is currently investigating 2020–2024 Chevrolet and GMC trucks and SUVs (including the Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, and GMC Sierra and Yukon) for critical safety defects relating to sudden, intermittent electric power steering (EPS) assist failure. A software and electrical system defect causes the power steering assist to unexpectedly shut off while driving, suddenly locking up or drastically increasing the steering effort required to control the vehicle.

Owners Report Sudden Loss of Steering Assist, Stiff Wheels, and Dashboard Warnings

Drivers of affected GM vehicles report harrowing experiences where the power steering assist drops out without warning, frequently accompanied by dashboard alerts such as "Steering Assist Is Reduced - Drive With Care" or "Service Power Steering." The failure commonly manifests during low-speed maneuvers as well as at highway speeds. This sudden transition to manual steering requires immense physical force to turn the wheel, leaving drivers struggling to maintain lane control and significantly increasing the risk of collisions.

Inadequate Recalls, Voltage Drop Glitches, and Costly Out-of-Pocket Repairs

While General Motors previously issued recalls for select model years regarding voltage drops in the EPS module, owners report that software updates and module replacements have failed to permanently eliminate the sudden power loss across all affected years and models. Dealerships frequently charge thousands of dollars out of pocket to replace steering gear assemblies, EPS control modules, and wiring harnesses after warranties expire. We are investigating whether GM designed, manufactured, and sold these vehicles with knowledge of a persistent, unaddressed power steering defect.
