Securities Attorney in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., sits at the center of the country's securities regulatory system. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is headquartered in the District; FINRA maintains a Washington office, and the D.C. Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB) regulates securities activity at the local level. For D.C. investors, however, access to regulators does not replace individual representation when losses result from misconduct involving a broker, financial advisor, brokerage firm, or investment.

At Scott Hirsch Law Group, PLLC, we represent Washington, D.C. investors in securities disputes, including matters handled through FINRA arbitration. From our nearby Rockville, Maryland, office, we help investors pursue recovery when broker, advisor, or brokerage firm misconduct has caused significant financial losses.

Representing Investors in the D.C. Securities Market

D.C. investors have several regulatory resources close at hand. The D.C. Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking accepts complaints concerning securities products, services, brokers, and investment advisers. Investors can also use the agency to check whether an investment opportunity is registered in the District or whether a securities firm or professional has a disciplinary history.

Those resources serve an important regulatory and investor-protection function, but they are different from having a firm pursue your individual financial losses. We represent investors themselves, including in disputes with brokerage firms and financial professionals. Our role is to examine what happened to your investment, determine whether misconduct contributed to the loss, and pursue an appropriate claim when the circumstances support one.

That distinction matters in Washington because the institutions regulating the securities industry are highly visible, but an investor dispute may still require private representation. Filing a regulatory complaint or reporting suspected misconduct does not itself provide an attorney to represent your financial interests.

D.C. investors may also find themselves dealing with more than one part of this regulatory system. A financial professional may be registered through FINRA, a securities issue may fall within the SEC's federal oversight, and DISB may have authority over activity occurring in the District. These institutions have different responsibilities, and their involvement does not necessarily determine how an individual investor should pursue a financial loss. We help D.C. clients assess their own circumstances and determine whether private legal action is appropriate alongside any regulatory activity.

FINRA Arbitration for Washington, D.C. Investors

Washington is also part of FINRA's nationwide dispute-resolution network. FINRA maintains a hearing location in Washington, D.C., and under FINRA Rule 12213, the hearing location for a customer arbitration is generally selected based on the location closest to where the customer lived when the events giving rise to the dispute occurred. FINRA's current hearing-location statistics include Washington, D.C. among its active arbitration locations.

This creates a direct local connection for District investors whose disputes with brokerage firms proceed through FINRA. We represent investors nationwide in FINRA arbitration and travel to the location FINRA assigns for a client's hearing.

For someone living in Washington, that structure can make the District relevant to the dispute even when the brokerage firm itself is headquartered elsewhere. FINRA arbitration is not limited to disputes involving D.C.-based financial businesses, and an investor does not need to look only for a firm in the location where a brokerage has its corporate offices. Our nationwide FINRA practice allows us to represent Washington investors while remaining available through our office in the surrounding metropolitan area.

Our attorney has represented thousands of investors nationwide and recovered millions from brokerage firms on their behalf. Our reported results include a $5.6 million FINRA arbitration award for investors who were victims of securities fraud, a $1.4 million FINRA arbitration settlement involving unauthorized trading, and an $875,000 settlement involving account churning.

A Securities Firm Near Washington, D.C. With Nationwide Reach

Our Rockville office is immediately outside the District in Montgomery County, giving Washington investors access to our firm within the metropolitan area. At the same time, our securities practice is nationwide, so we can represent D.C. investors in disputes involving brokerage firms and financial institutions located elsewhere in the country.

That geographic reach also fits the FINRA arbitration system. FINRA maintains hearing locations throughout the United States, including Washington, D.C., and we represent investors in FINRA proceedings nationwide.

For D.C. clients, this means the firm handling a securities dispute need not be located in the same city as the brokerage firm involved.
